Lifestyle Tips & Tricks for Health & Fitness in Your Later Years

Staying healthy and fit is crucial at every stage of your life. As you get older, the impact of wellness often becomes clearer, but it can also become more difficult to maintain. With age, factors ranging from time conflicts through physical restrictions can come into play and impact wellness ability.

But since staying healthy may extend your life and improve its quality, finding a way to incorporate wellness activities into daily life is critical. Below are a few tips and tricks that will help you on your journey to a healthier and more physically active life.

Adjust Your Diet

As your body ages, you may face greater risk for cardiac or pulmonary-related problems.[1] One way to reduce your risk is by altering your diet. You will not need to follow a strict or severely restrictive regime; instead, make small changes that are easier to live with.[2]

Start by reducing your daily salt intake and cutting out sugars that are not necessary. Add more fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. Manageable changes like these could significantly reduce your risk of health problems while also improving your mood and mental health.[3]

Get Your Heart Rate Up

Exercising may be more challenging as you get older.[4] Wear on the joints can make specific exercises more difficult and even painful. Staying active is important for maintaining good blood pressure, regulating blood sugars, and maintain a more healthy weight.

Try to think outside the box when it comes to exercise. You don’t need to run miles or do high-impact aerobics to stay active. All you need to do is get your heart rate up for about a half-hour each day.[5] Take it easy on your joints and try walking or swimming, always being sure to start small and work your way up as needed.[6] Doing too much too quickly may result in possible injury.

Stay on Top of Screenings

Regular checkups and health screenings are important at any age, but become more important as you get older.[7] By staying on top of these screenings, you will be able to catch health concerns before they get worse and get the proper treatment. Additionally, your doctor will help you understand the ideal nutrition and exercise you need to include in your daily life to allow you to be as healthy as possible.

Follow the tips above to stay on top of your health to enjoy your daily activities. Is your financial situation in need of a health checkup? Contact the professionals at LPL Financial to get started on the path to financial wellness.
